Leadership Has Nothing to do With a Title.
This, my dear, is a life fact. Unfortunately, in the world of direct sales, we are taught differently. Think about that for a minute; the career plan, how promotions are earned, the higher pay scale and most important access to information is all tied to a title. A direct sales career plan is created for one reason; to promote GROWTH. But not the growth that leads to good direct sales leadership. There is a clear disconnect between the value to the people vs the value to the company and this is where I believe things are set up to do a real disservice to those in the field. So let’s talk about ways you can be a leader, act like a leader before you reach the coveted “leadership” status within your company.
Be the Voice of Reason
No. I am not talking about unicorns and rainbows. Think more BIG PICTURE.
Here’s an example: Your company has released a new product each month, for the past three months. Each and every product has sold out within two days of release. Instead of looking at it as a negative, it’s important for direct sales leaders to realize that having an in-demand product is NEVER a bad thing. On top of that simple truth, it’s important to remember that if a company is new, they don’t have long-standing projections to work from. In other words, it’s a work in progress. The solution for the field is to create a sense of urgency for the customers to pick these products up quickly! This not only instills a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) but it encourages them to pay attention to when you post. See! Voice of reason!
Network with Like-Minded People
Whether it’s within your team, company or industry or outside of it, networking with like-minded people is one simple way to elevate yourself mentally. Find those people who share your business ethics, your excitement and your need for constant growth. Look for the people who are willing to share what they know, as you return the favor. Surround yourself with people who are great at the things that you need to work on! In other words, strive for GROWTH.
Be a Servant Leader
When we give freely, we receive automatically. It’s as simple as that. Being a servant leader simply means to go forward with a pure heart, to help without expectation and to leave our ego at the door. I understand that it’s hard when you want success so bad to do all the previously stated things. It’s hard to forget about the sale, forget about the paycheck and just do. But in the world of business, people do business with those they feel a connection with. And connection comes from giving. When it comes to people it will always come back to how you make people feel. So listen, share and support are the three words to keep in the forefront of your mind when interacting with those around you.
Leadership is not defined by a certain title and it doesn’t skip you because you haven’t reached and crossed an invisible line in the sand. It is about how you carry yourself, how you build your reputation and how you share what you know. It’s about bettering yourself and surrounding yourself with those that are like minded and are GREAT at the things you need to work on. And finally, direct sales leadership is all about leaving your ego at the door and knowing that there is enough success for everyone!
